Other Ways To Give:

Appreciated Securities/Stock

Gifts of securities such as stocks or other appreciated assets can be a great tax-efficient way to make a gift to TVC. In most instances, you can take a tax deduction for the full market value of the gift and avoid any capital gains tax.

Please contact TVC by phone: 401-228-8683 or email: office.manager@villagecommonri.org with any questions you may have and for help in making gifts of appreciated securities.

Donor Advised Funds

To make a gift from your donor advised fund please follow the instructions provided by your fund administrator for making a grant recommendation.

DAF providers usually offer a search tool to help donors find the charities they wish to support. You should find TVC listed as follows: The Providence Village of Rhode Island dba Village Common of Rhode Island’s Federal Tax Identification Number (EIN): 47-3675451

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions or QCDs

If you are 70½ years or older, you can make a tax-free distribution from your individual retirement account (IRA) to The Village Common of RI. Any qualified contribution up to $100,000 counts toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). (Your spouse may also make a qualified distribution up to $100,000.) You’ll want to discuss this strategy with your financial and tax advisers. QCDs must be made through a direct distribution to a qualified charity (you can’t receive the funds yourself and then send them to TVC) and are advantageous to donors seeking to lower their tax bill on required RMDs.

How it works
To make a gift from your IRA, contact your IRA administrator (for example, Fidelity, Merrill Lynch, Schwab, Vanguard, etc.) and ask the representative to send a check in the amount of your desired gift (up to $100,000) payable to “The Village Common of Rhode Island, Federal Tax Identification Number: 47-3675451”

Your IRA Administrator should send the check directly to:
The Village Common of RI
Bliss Place, Suite 406
245 Waterman Street
Providence, RI 02906

You can also find a sample letter and instructions HERE.

Planned Giving

While every gift is “planned” to some degree, you also have the potential through your legacy to help ensure that The Village Common will always be there to help more older Rhode Islanders benefit from our communities of mutual support.

Planned gifts sustain the important work of TVC while helping you to achieve your own charitable and financial goals. Through a planned gift, you may choose to support a current program or project, or to support an endowment fund that will grow to sustain the organization over the long term. In 2023, TVC has created the governance structures, accounts, policies and procedures needed to ensure that donor wishes are met and that gifts intended for an endowment are able to be managed appropriately. We would be happy to discuss our program.

We are establishing a society for the purpose of celebrating those who make planned gifts to The Village Common in their estate plans. If you have made or will make a planned gift to The Village Common, we would appreciate it if you would let us know by completing our simple confidential gift intention form which may be found HERE.

There are many ways to make a planned gift. Provided below is some basic information about bequests and beneficiary designations, two of the most frequently selected methods of making a planned gift.

Bequests: Gifts by Will or Trust

Remembering The Village Common of Rhode Island in your will is a great way to help sustain our work while retaining access to your wealth and the flexibility to change your mind.

A bequest is included as a provision in your will or living trust. An experienced attorney can help you create an estate plan that accomplishes your goals, including a bequest.

We would be happy to consult with you and/or your attorney to design a bequest that will be meaningful to you and that we are able to carry out. Additionally, we have prepared sample language that can be included in your estate plan:

  • Please always use our full legal name:
“The Providence Village of RI, dba The Village Common of Rhode Island, Providence RI, a Rhode Island nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number: 47-3675451”
  • General Language for a stated sum of money:
“I give to The Providence Village of RI, dba The Village Common of Rhode Island, Providence RI, a Rhode Island nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number: 47-3675451 [insert here the exact dollar amount or percentage.]
  • Residuary Language, after other bequests and expenses have been paid:
“I give to The Providence Village of RI, dba The Village Common of Rhode Island, Providence RI, a Rhode Island nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number: 47-3675451, all [or a portion] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.”

Beneficiary Designations

One of the simplest ways to make a gift to The Village Common of Rhode Island is to name the organization as a beneficiary of one or more of your financial accounts. You can specify the individuals and charities you want to support and you can also specify the amounts or % of assets you want each beneficiary to receive. This can be accomplished by requesting and completing the beneficiary forms for your accounts.

You’ll need to provide just a few key pieces of information when designating a beneficiary:

  • Beneficiary type: spouse, non-spouse, trust, entity
  • For individuals: Full name, date of birth, and if possible Social Security number
  • For entities, you would need the full name: “The Providence Village of RI, dba The Village Common of Rhode Island, Providence RI, a Rhode Island nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number: 47-3675451”
  • The amount or % of the account you wish to leave.
  • You can also name contingent beneficiaries. Contingent beneficiaries receive your assets if there is no living primary beneficiary.

As with bequests, when making a gift to a charity by a beneficiary designation, you retain control of your assets and the flexibility to change your mind about your gift.
