Our Community

The Providence Village’s members and volunteers bring a variety of experiences and perspectives to our community, enriching and delighting us all. We will be sharing more about our members: for now, here’s a sample.

  • One of our newer members trained as a chef at the Rhode Island School of Design (back when RISD trained chefs) and was chef at a beloved Providence restaurant (now closed) for twenty years. She’s a great reader and walker of late, and lives with her dog and cat.
  • One stalwart member was an interior designer, and brings that style and precision to all she does now for the Village as a volunteer.
  • A brand-new member has lived in Manhattan, Washington, D.C., and Barrington, among other places. After college and Vietnam (Navy), a variety of business ventures prepared him for a part-time faculty position teaching business at Bryant University in Smithfield.
  • Like many other members, this happy nonagenarian moved to Providence to be closer to family. She’s a great cook and baker: the cookie jar is always full for her grandkids, who can walk over for a visit and a cookie or two. She’s enjoying many of the small-group activities the Village offers, and is considering joining the Welcome and Friends team to reach out to members who’d enjoy an occasional phone call or visit.
  • One 92-year-old enjoyed robust health until a couple of injuries complicated her life. With the “‘outstanding” support of Village volunteers, she’s able to work with a cherished physical therapist to carry on as independently as possible.
